The Prophetic Anointing/Gifting

In this teaching I would like to share with your what the Lord has taught me about the prophetic anointing or gift of prophesy.

I’d always been enthralled by the prophetic and would go and listen to prophetic preachers whenever I got the chance. Whenever a person would prophesy, my spiritual ears would prick up. They had something I wanted. It wasn’t until years later that I realised I could have this gift for myself.

So what is the prophetic gifting/anointing exactly?

To break it down as simply as possible, the prophetic is the utterance of God. People including Christians have made the prophetic to be something mystical and spooky, when in fact it is not. A prophetic person takes the time to seek God on behalf of a person, a business, a congregation etc. He then shares what he has heard God saying for them and to them. Sometimes the gift of a word of knowledge and a word of wisdom will be included in the prophesy.

A word of knowledge happens when the Lord tells you something about a person, place or thing that you could not have possibly known by yourself. It always involves something from the past or present. For eg., you may bring up something from the person you are ministering to or prophesying to about their childhood that they never told you. God will often times use this a healing tool.

A word of wisdom is when God gives you supernatural wisdom/leading/guidance on a situation that person might be facing. A wisdom that comes from God about some present or future event.

A directional word is given when God tells you how best to direct a person in a personal, business, financial, marriage, etc. decision. He will give them a clue as to which way to go.

The purpose of a prophetic word is ALWAYS to exhort, comfort or encourage. It is NEVER to tear or break down. 1 Corinthians 4:3

As Christians, we can all hear the voice of God, therefor we can all prophesy. We should all be moving in the prophetic, encouraging each other. The word of God says that He would have that ALL would prophesy.

1 Corinthians 12: 31 says that the only thing we need to have to get the gift is to EAGERLY DESIRE IT. Corinthians 14:1 says that we should set our hearts on spiritual gifts, ESPECIALLY the gift of prophecy. The one who speaks in strange tongues does not speak to others, but to God because no one understands him. He is speaking secret truths by the power of the Spirit. The one who prophesies (proclaims God’s message) speaks to people and gives them edification, encouragement and comfort.

My own gift did not come without a struggle. The year my father passed away, the Lord began to create a desire in me to prophesy. Up until this point I did not realise that I could prophesy. It was like a fire in my spirit that would not be doused. I began to buy books on the subject, listened to teachings and went to churches where the prophetic was accepted. I searched for prophetic ministries online and signed up for a prophetic school and I prayed. When I received my first assignment, I immediately began to prophesy!!! In the beginning it was hard to decipher if it was God’s voice or mine, but with practise it became easier. I started learning that God can talk to us in many ways.

Some of the ways are in dreams and visions, through journaling, through the word, through other people, a song (secular or spiritual) and through the Urim and Thummim. In the Old testament, the Lord had Moses make a very special robe for Aaron to wear during his office. You can read about this in Exodus 28. Tradition suggests that there were two smooth stones in Aaron’s breastplate – one being white and the one black. When the children of Israel needed a yes or no answer about something, they would pay Aaron a visit. He would then slip his hand into his breastplate and pull out either the Urim or the Thummim.

The Urim meant the Lord said yes and the Thummim meant He said no!

Today we have the Holy spirit on the inside of us guiding us with a yes or a no. If you think back to a time when you’ve had to make an important decision on something and you either felt a sense of peace or a feeling of foreboding. That is the Urim and the Thummim talking there. The Lord was giving you the yes/no answer you were looking for.

The way God gives me a word is usually two fold. Sometimes I will be talking to the Lord (praying) when suddenly he will bring a person to my remembrance and show me an image of them in my mind. I then know that the Lord has that person on His mind and that He wants to give them a message. I ask the Lord what He wants to say and He will either give me a vision/picture of something. He then gives me the revelation of what that picture means in that person’s life. The other way He talks to me is by emphasising a word or two in my spirit. i.e. I will hear a word or two and then I ask the Lord what that means. He will then give me the interpretation. It is a fallacy that you have to wait for God to give you a prophetic word for someone or to activate your gift. God always wants to talk to us. You can activate the gift of prophesy at will, just like you activate the gift of tongues. i.e. if the Lord lays someone on my heart, I can ask Him for a word for that person and He always gives it to me.

The prophetic is part of the fivefold ministry spoken of in Ephesians 4:11 – the word says that it was He who gave gifts to mankind, He appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers. HE DID THIS TO PREPARE ALL GOD’S PEOPLE FOR THE WORK OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE IN ORDER TO BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST.

However, the prophetic gifting/anointing and being a prophet (office of the prophet) are two different things. Each church should have a pastor, a prophet or prophets, evangelists, teachers and apostles for the building up of the body of Christ.

Sadly there are some churches that do not accept the prophetic just like there are some churches who do not accept the gift of talking in tongues.

It is God’s desire that we ALL prophecy. Acts 2:17 says In the last days I will pour out My spirit on ALL people, Your sons and daughters will prophecy, your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams.

We can ALL hear God’s voice. The most common way He speaks to us is through the soft, still voice. God will never tell you anything contrary to His word or His principles. A good way to start is to practise is on your friends and family or people who won’t judge you and will allow you to make a few mistakes. 1 Corinthians 13 v 9 Says that for now we see in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

We don’t usually start off getting words that we don’t understand. God will use you where you are at. He will use what you’ve got. For instance, I don’t know much about geography, but when the Lord gives me a prophetic word for another country, He will usually show me a vision of something that I can connect to that Country. Like when I got a word for Sweden, I got a picture of the alps and of Heidi from the old tv series that used to be on many years back. God knew that I would make the connection. God is gentle and He will never give you more than you can handle.

So why not give it a try? The next time you are in prayer and the Lord brings someone to your mind, instead of only praying for them, ask the Lord what He wants to say to them through you. He may give you a picture, a few words or a whole sentence. Then ask Him for the interpretation of what you have just seen or heard. Then write down what you hear/see and be brave enough to actually share it with that person. It helps a lot if you get feedback from people initially just to see if you have heard correctly. The prophetic is lots of fun and it feels good to be able to encourage or comfort one another.

If you have been blessed by this teaching, please leave a comment below. That way we both grow.!!!
